The Dental Board serves MPS by providing advice on developments within dentistry and sharing experience which may impact on MPS and the membership of its Dental members. This Board also advises the Council on engagement with Dental members, and their issues and needs.

Callum Youngson (DPL Chair)

Callum Youngson joined the Dental Board in 2014, and then the wider MPS Council as a non-executive director in July 2017. His position on Council is ex officio due to his role as the Chair of the Dental Board and thus he is not elected by the membership.

Callum graduated as a dentist from the University of Dundee in 1982, and then trained in various hospital and university posts at Leeds Dental School, becoming Senior Lecturer/Hon Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in 1997 and Head of Conservative Dentistry.

In 2004, he was appointed Professor of Restorative Dentistry at Liverpool University and served as Head of the School of Dentistry from 2008 until 2017, where he taught the BDS Law and Ethics course.

Professor Youngson sits on a number of national committees in dentistry and has most recently chaired the Dental Schools Council. He is currently the Head of the Institute of Clinical Sciences (incorporating the Schools of Dentistry, Health Sciences and Medicine) at the University of Liverpool. 

His long-term clinical interests lie in the failure of fixed prosthodontics, managing toothwear and the diagnosis of complex oro-facial pain.

Dr Graham Stokes (Chair)

Graham Stokes joined the Council as a non-executive director of MPS in September 2017 and submits himself for formal election by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in October 2017.

He qualified as a dentist from Birmingham in 1984. He is the lead clinician in a referral dental practice in Bromsgrove with a special interest in implants and prosthetics. He was a vocational training adviser from 1999-2009 and now lectures widely on a range of dental topics. He was on the Principal Executive Committee of the British Dental Association from 2010 -2014 and was chair of the British Dental Association’s Health and Science committee from 2010-2015.Graham is a current member of the BDA ’s English and UK councils. 

Dr Stokes is a senior clinical adviser and member of the council of reference for the charity Bridge2aid, and has led numerous teams of dental volunteers to Tanzania providing dental emergency care.

Mr Ian Eardley (Chair of MPS Council)

BA(Hons) MB BChir MA FRCS MChir FRCS(Urol)

Ian Eardley joined the Council as a non-executive director in November 2015, was elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting in June 2016, and appointed Chairman on 1 October, 2018.

Ian studied medicine at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and undertook urological training in St Bartholomew's Hospital, Portsmouth, Cambridge and Norwich. He was appointed to the post of Consultant Urologist at Leeds General Infirmary in 1993 where he has worked ever since, specialising in andrology, reconstruction of the urinary tract and genital surgery. 

In 2014 he was awarded the St Peter’s medal by the British Association of Urological surgeons for his contributions to the advancement of Urology. He has extensive experience in surgical education and training, and has been Chairman of the Joint Committee for Surgical training. He was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2010 and became Vice President of the College in July 2015.

Rubina Fur

BDS (Lond)

Rubina Fur was appointed to the Dental Board in June 2021.

Rubina qualified from Barts and The Royal London Hospital School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1996.

She is a highly experienced general dental practitioner in an NHS/private practice in West Wickham, Kent. She was involved in the early stages of contract reform and played a key role in the implementation of new ways of working, as the practice was one of the original pilot sites.

She was a Dental Foundation Trainer/ Clinical Supervisor for 12 consecutive years, and was appointed a Trainee Support Tutor in the London Deanery (now Health Education England) in 2008, a post she held until 2018. This role involved working with foundation dentists to support their professional development and being available as a mentor.

During this time, she developed her interests in dental law and ethics and has undertaken postgraduate studies in law and ethics at Bedford University.

Ryan Hennessey

Ryan Hennessey was appointed to the Dental Advisory Board in June 2021

Dr Hennessey is general dental practitioner in Cahir, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. He qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 2006, going on to establish his own practice in 2010, where he focusses on preventative tooth-conserving dentistry. 

Ryan is the founding member of Inspire Dental, a group that provides CPD, compliance support and advice to general dentists.

Prior to this, he has held numerous roles within the Irish Dental Association (IDA), including that of Director, Council member, GP Group Chairperson, and Honorary Membership Secretary. Through this work, he has lead panel discussions on independent practice and the business of dentistry, delivered CPD at IDA national conferences, and represented the IDA at the Practitioner Health Matters Programme.

Ryan is also the former chair of Dental Protection’s Irish Dental Advisory Committee.

Judith Husband

BDS

Judith Husband was appointed to the Dental Board in June 2019.

For over twenty years Judith has worked in general dental practice, committed to providing prevention based dental care to her patients.

In addition to providing clinical care Judith is the Managing Director of her own consultancy company and a trustee of the Oral and Dental Research Trust. She is a keen advocate for the dental profession and patients. Corporate governance and strategic leadership are also key areas of interest, with formal qualifications from the Institute of Directors holding both the Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction.

After graduating from Liverpool Dental School, in 1997 Judith undertook an additional two years postgraduate training in the city, gaining experience in primary and secondary dental care. Relocating to Oxford she managed and worked in both NHS and private practices, in recent years working primarily within secure settings (prisons). With the introduction of competitive tendering in the NHS, a decade ago, Judith has gained wide experience of the developing processes and legislative changes in tendering.

Expanding her clinical services to include reviews and improvement plans for existing prison dental health services and training/induction programmes for new and existing teams. Judith has been actively involved nationally in UK dentistry throughout her career, beginning with the British Dental Association Students Committee and becoming BDSA President. This involvement in national and international dental organisations has provided a unique insight, into the wider world of dentistry, regulation and healthcare provision. 

Since January 2006 Judith has been elected to the Executive Board and subsequently Principal Executive Committee of the British Dental Association acting as a non Executive director. In addition to the usual corporate governance responsibilities she has been Chair of Audit Committee and remains a member of the Board sub-committee. She has an ongoing focus on matters related to professional regulation, education, the dental team and professional ethics. There has been extensive working outside the field of dentistry with the Home Office, Border Agency, numerous other professional organisations and the Commission for Equality and Human Rights.

In addition to involvement on a national level, Judith has continually worked with her Local Dental Committees and actively contributed throughout the numerous reorganisations and restructuring of the various NHS commissioning bodies. In 2001, she gave oral evidence before the House of Commons Select Committee for Health and worked on the resulting Options for Change project with the Department of Health, serving until its dissolution on the Secretary of State’s Standing Dental Advisory Committee.

Onkar Dhanoya

Onkar Dhanoya was appointed to the Dental Board in June 2019.

Onkar graduated as a dental surgeon from Newcastle University in 1985 and has been principal dental surgeon since 1986, and a clinical teacher at Newcastle Dental Hospital since 1995. He holds postgraduate qualifications in implant dentistry, conscious sedation, dental acupuncture, facial aesthetics, clinical education, dental practice management and dental practice appraisal.

Onkar also holds Fellowships of both the Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP UK) and the International College of Dentists. He currently serves as Vice-Dean of the FGDP UK, representing the Yorkshire and Northern region, chairing the Professional Affairs Committee and the working group which developed the recently published ‘Implications of Covid-19 for the safe management of general dental practice’.

He is also past President of BDA Northern Counties Branch and Chair of the North Tyne LDC.

Jigar Patel

BDS (Lond) MFDS RCS MJDF RCS M’ORTH RCS MPhil F’ORTH RCS PGCert DentEd

Jigar Patel was appointed to the Dental Board in June 2021.

He qualified from Guy’s, Kings and St Thomas’ Dental Institute in London. Jigar undertakes clinical practice in primary care dental practice and within the secondary care hospital service, and thus appreciates and recognises the challenges presented in both.

He was appointed as a Consultant Orthodontist and the Clinical Lead for Orthodontics for East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust in 2014. Jigar has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons for the MFDS examination and is actively involved in teaching and training. He is also a member of the British Dental Association and the British Orthodontic Society.

Shaam Shamsi

Shaam Shamsi was appointed to the Dental Board in June 2021.

Shaam qualified from the Royal London in 1994. He is a Clinical Director based in Staffordshire, and has an interest in cosmetic and implant dentistry.

As a former lecturer in the restorative department at Manchester Dental School teaching final year students, he continues to instil this ethos of learning in his current practices.

Shaam has been involved with Dental Foundation Training since 2001, teaching and mentoring new graduates in practice. In 2008, he was appointed to the post of Dental Foundation Training Programme Director in Midlands & East and is responsible for running the training schemes at Stafford County Hospital & Royal Stoke hospital.

Shaam sits on the Local Dental Committee panel in North & South Staffordshire. A former examiner for the Faculty’s MJDF examination, he now currently examines for Overseas Registration examination in London, Royal College of Surgeon's LDS examination and the MFDS in Edinburgh.

In 2006, he acquired a postgraduate diploma in Medical Ethics and Law and has worked as a clinical panellist for the General Dental Council’s (GDC) Dental Complaints Service. In December 2020, Shaam completed his 10-year appointment sitting as a panellist for the GDC’s Fitness to Practice procedures adjudicating matters on clinical and professional misconduct. He also mentors general dental practitioners who are subject to Fitness To Practice investigations.

Shaam has a passion for teaching and delivering education at postgraduate level. He enjoys lecturing nationally and internationally where he has been invited by many overseas institutions to present on the MJDF, ORE and medicolegal matters. He lectures for many authoritative bodies such as Health Education England and Dental Protection on Risk Management Workshops.

He also sits on the Committee for Barts and the London Alumni, is as Specialist Advisor to the Care Quality Commission and plays a pivotal role in practice inspections ensuring Quality Assurance standards are maintained.

Shaam has been well known for his lecture on ‘Raising Medico-Legal Awareness in Implant Dentistry’ for many established implant companies such as Osstem and Straumann, for BAIRD (British Academy of Implant and Restorative Dentistry), Practical Implantology, Dental Routes and the Association of Dental Implantology.
