Support is key for increasing number of international dental graduates, says Dental Protection

Dental Protection has called for increased support for the growing number of overseas qualified dentists. This follows publication of the General Dental Council’s (GDC) latest statistical report which revealed that for the first time, more internationally qualified dentists joined the register in 2025 than UK-qualified dentists.

Dr Archana Naik, Dentolegal Consultant at Dental Protection said: “With 53% of registrants having qualified overseas (compared with 47% for UK-qualified dentists), it is clear that internationally qualified dentists are an increasingly vital part of the dental workforce. However, our research shows that these dental professionals experience a stressful time emotionally, professionally and financially.

“Levels of support and practice environments are varied and new registrants can find themselves isolated. I remember how important it was, as an internationally qualified dentist myself, to have access to appropriate support to help with the transition into UK practice after completing the registration process.

“At Dental Protection, we will continue to engage with the GDC and other organisations. We have also recently launched a New-to-UK Practice Hub that includes access to employment contract checking, dentolegal advice, complaints support, wellbeing support and access to a range of resources on Dental Protection’s The Learning Hub.”
