Industrial action going ahead

05 January 2016

On Tuesday 5 January the BDA announced that talks with the Department of Health around the doctors in training contract dispute had ended and that it would proceed with industrial action. The first full strike is due to start on 12 January.

Dental Protection recognises and respects the strength of feeling this issue has provoked amongst members. We encourage members taking part in industrial action to satisfy themselves that arrangements will be in place to care for patients, as per GDC guidance. Further information can be found on the GDC website. The GDC’s Standards for the Dental Team does not prevent dentists from taking part in industrial action but should they attract a complaint they must be prepared to justify the decisions they have made. Dentists who are not involved in the industrial action and are keen to support their colleagues by covering shifts should ensure they act within their expertise and seek support from senior colleagues, where necessary.

Dental Protection can provide advice and support to members with ethical issues that may arise from their professional practice but they should contact their trade union to discuss queries relating to industrial action. If a member’s action results in a complaint to the GDC and/or the GMC (where members are dually registered,) we encourage them to contact us. If you require such assistance please do not hesitate to contact us on 0800 561 1010 or by email to [email protected]
