Outstanding line up at Premier Symposium 2013

26 November 2013

The Shaw Theatre at the Pullman St Pancras in London was the setting for the thirteenth annual Premier Symposium, one of the largest dental risk management events of its kind in the UK. The 2013 event, organised by Dental Protection, the international leader in dental risk management, and schülke, the European leader in cross-infection control, was held on Saturday 23 November. 300 people attended the event.

This year's expert panel of speakers included Tara Renton, Professor in Oral Surgery at King's College London Dental Institute, Howard Lloyd, Specialist Endodontist, Andrew Smith, Professor and Consultant Microbiologist at Glasgow Dental Hospital, Crispian Scully, Professor at University College London (UCL) and Serpil Djemal, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Clinical Lead at King’s College Dental Hospital.

Professor Tara Renton opened the conference by discussing difficult extractions, and how to anticipate and manage complications in oral surgery. Tara was followed by Howard Lloyd who examined the difficult root canal and the potential risks and complications in endodontics.

The third speaker of the day, Professor Andrew Smith considered the facts and fictions behind water line contamination, and the risks from Prions and vCJD.

After lunch, Professor Crispian Scully explored the oral manifestations of new and emerging conditions, and provided a guided tour of normal and abnormal oral mucosa.

In the final session of the day, Dr Serpil Djemal outlined the key principles behind clinical and dento-legal issues in managing traumatic dental injuries in adult patients.

The day was chaired by Dr Kevin Lewis, Dental Director of Dental Protection who commented, 'The continuing success of the Premier Symposium is based on two essential components; the calibre of speakers and relevance of the topics to our audience. With the extra capacity at this year’s venue it was a pleasure to be able to welcome so many delegates who have been to the symposium before as well as lots of new dental members for whom this was their first visit. The feedback has been wonderful and reflects great credit on all involved.'

The Premier Symposium also included the presentation of the new ‘Dental Practice of the Year’ and ‘Dental Student of the Year’ Awards 2013.

The organisers wish to thank Denplan, Dentists Provident, Dental Update, GC UK and Healthcare Learning Smile-on for their continued support.
