Over 240 young dentists attended the Young Dentist Conference at the Royal College of Physicians in London on Saturday 9th February 2013. The expert panel of speakers included Ian Dunn, Teaching Lead in Periodontics at Liverpool University, Nick Lewis, a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital, Michael Lessani, Executive on the BDA Young Dentists Committee and John Tiernan, Director of Educational Services for Dental Protection.
Ian Dunn opened the eighth annual conference looking at treating periodontal disease and the challenges young dentists may face when patients go undiagnosed.
The second speaker, Nick Lewis examined the pros and cons of restoration, extraction and referral, and suggested areas to look out for when considering which option is in the patient’s best interests.
He was followed by Michael Lessani who looked at the various options available to recently qualified dentists, and provided insight into his own first five years in practice.
In the final session of the day, John Tiernan explored communication skills (with both patients and members of the clinical team), consent, record keeping, ethics and open disclosure.
The Young Dentist Conference 2013 was the eighth outing of this annual event organised by Dental Protection, the BDA and BDJ. The organisers wish to thank the exhibitors for their continued support.
