Laurence Walsh, Emeritus Professor, School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland

Overview: This presentation provides a summary of the areas where artificial intelligence applications have been explored for dental practice, including the most recently approved systems and the state of knowledge in the field. It is clear that no AI system can completely replace ‘wet fingered’ dentists. 14.15 NZSTPanel session | Embracing a forward-thinking mindset to thrive in dentistry in an uncertain world
Annalene Weston, Conference Chair and Dental Team Leader, Dental Protection (moderator)
Simon Parsons, Dentolegal Consultant, Dental Protection
Laurence Walsh, Emeritus Professor, School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland

Overview: "The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence itself, but to act with yesterday's logic” Peter Drucker.

There’s never been a more challenging time to practise and deliver outstanding patient care than now. In such rapidly changing times, there is a need to constantly evolve, and with that comes new inventions, different ways of thinking, and sharpening skills to gain the advantages necessary to succeed when considering the latest advancements in dentistry and global trends. During this panel discussion, executives will share how to thrive in this new reality by adopting a forward-thinking approach, but also understanding how to mitigate risks.

14.35 NZSTBuilding your Resilience Shield
Dan Pronk, Expert on Resilience and Tactical Medicine and Author of The Combat Doctor and The Resilience Shield

Overview: Dentistry is a high-pressure profession with a very fine line between success and failure. A cumulative load of small stressors (work and/or life) or an adverse event can be enough to present a very testing and confronting scenario. During this presentation, Dan Pronk will share the importance of understanding resilience and how to use the strategies of elite special forces soldiers to build and maintain a robust resilience against the stresses of modern-day life.

14.50 NZSTPanel session | When the storm hits – thriving amidst difficult times
Dan Pronk, Annalene Weston, Simon Parsons, Colm Harney

Overview: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” – Albert Einstein.

In an increasingly complex and uncertain world, it is likely that most of us have experienced some form of work-related unease, anxiety, stress, or fatigue. In constant pressure, we work in survival mode, forgetting to think about our emotional, physical, and mental well-being. During this panel, executives will discuss the fear of failing and its impact on crisis response, as well as the importance of restoring balance and gaining the ability to reflect, learn, rebound, and move forward.
