Planning your elective is an exciting and challenging time.
Whether you travel abroad or decide to stay in Ireland, this will be your first major opportunity to use the skills and knowledge you’ve learned over the last few years and experience life in a new environment.
While some aspects of planning your trip might seem complicated, one thing really doesn’t have to be: your elective protection.
Almost anywhere you decide to go will require you to have elective protection, including institutions in Ireland. But as you’re a member of Dental Protection we offer you support for your elective completely free.

Being a member gives you more than just the right to request indemnity. You’ll also be able to take advantage of other benefits. This includes access to our dentolegal advice line, with out-of-hours emergency support to help you tackle any dentolegal or ethical dilemmas you might face.
Am I eligible for elective protection?
If you’re a member of Dental Protection then you are already eligible for the best possible professional protection during your elective.
If you’re not a member yet, you can join for free
To qualify, you must also ensure the following:
- Your elective must be authorised by the Dean of your university
- Your elective work must be supervised by a qualified dental practitioner and must not exceed the level of your own qualifications or competence
- You must be a student member of Dental Protection in one of the following countries:
- South Africa
- Hong Kong
- New Zealand
- Caribbean & Bermuda

Dental electives in Australia
Planning to travel to Australia for your elective?
Australian legislation stipulates that all health care practitioners, including students, must be covered by an insurance contract while practising in Australia. To arrange your elective to Australia, please contact us on 1800 509 441.
How much does elective protection cost?
Elective protection from us is completely free.

Does this include travel insurance?
We can offer 24/7 advice and support, but you will need to arrange appropriate travel insurance separately that provides you with personal injury cover while working in hospital.
I’m not a member. Can I still take elective protection?
You would need to join Dental Protection to apply for our elective protection. This is very simple to do, complete the application form.
When do I need to advise you that I’m going on elective?
Get in touch as soon as your host has confirmed your elective placement.
What information do I need to give you to set up my elective protection?
All we need is:
• the dates of your elective
• the country you will be going to.
What do I need to show my elective host as proof of elective protection?
We will provide you with an elective certificate of indemnity.
Will you provide elective protection to my classmates?
Yes. As long as they are a Dental Protection member and meet our elective criteria. Each classmate will need to apply individually for their elective protection.
