Thank you for joining us at the 16th Edition of Ethics For All, where dental professionals tackled evolving dentolegal and ethical issues in dentistry.

 

The conference was designed to offer a platform from which we could share insights into the complex risks involved in practising dentistry in today’s ever-changing world.

Norman Cahi mono

Dr Norman Cahi 

Cosmetic and Family Dentist, Cahi Dental Practice 

Dr Cahi runs the well-known and highly regarded Cahi Dental Practice in Parktown North, Johannesburg. For the past four decades, Dr Cahi has dedicated his life to oral healthcare and is one of the pioneers for teeth whitening and cosmetic dentistry in South Africa. Dr Cahi has often been invited to be an expert guest on both radio and TV on all things dentally related for the past 25 years. He has been a member of SADA and Medical Protection since graduating from Wits in 1986.
 
 

Jonathan Du Toit mono

Dr Jonathan Du Toit 

Specialist in Periodontics and Oral Medicine, Nexus

Dr Du Toit completed his dentistry studies at UWC, followed by a postgraduate diploma in oral surgery from the College of Maxillofacial and Surgeons of South Africa, a diploma in implantology from the Implant and the Aesthetic Academy/University of Frankfurt, and a master’s degree from Wits. Dr Du Toit completed his specialist training at the University of Pretoria in periodontics and oral medicine, while at the same time completing a PhD from Szeged University in Hungary. Dr Du Toit is the first in ten years to earn a Fellowship in Oral Medicine and Periodontology from the College of Dentistry of South Africa. He is the past vice president of the South African Society for Periodontology, Implantology, and Oral Medicine, as well as a current council member for the College of Dentistry of South Africa.

Dr Du Toit has published 32 peer-reviewed journal publications, and four textbook chapters. Being active in research, Dr Du Toit has published in, reviews for, or is on the editorial board for The International Journal of Aesthetic Dentistry, Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, and Journal of Oral Implantology, to name a few. Dr Du Toit has had frequent lecture invitations, both local and international. His current focus and passion is the upliftment and post-qualifying education of young dentists and dental professionals in South Africa, as director of NEXUS Dental. 
 
 

Alasdair_new

Dr Alasdair McKelvie

Dr McKelvie graduated from Dundee Dental School in 1984. He spent the first 23 years of his professional life in primary dental care, providing a range of mixed dental services from his practice in East Yorkshire. In 2005, Dr McKelvie obtained an LLM in Healthcare Law from Cardiff Law School and joined Dental Protection in 2008 as a full-time dentolegal adviser. He is now Dental Service Lead for our members in South Africa and Namibia.
 
 

Louise Eggleton mono

Dr Louise Eggleton 

Dr Eggleton is an international dentolegal consultant for Dental Protection, completing a LLM master’s degree in medical law and ethics in 2022. Dr Eggleton has experience working as a General Dental Practitioner in NHS and private practice before accepting the position of Senior Dental Officer within an NHS Foundation Trust. In this role, Dr Eggleton provided education and supervision to dental students as part of the student outreach programme as an honorary clinical lecturer for the University of Sheffield.

Athol Gordon_Clyde

Partner, Clyde & Co.

Athol's primary area of interest for the last two decades has been in the field of medical negligence. In this capacity, he has represented hundreds of medical and related practitioners in relation to all aspects of professional practice, including claims, disciplinary proceedings, inquests, and professional conduct matters. Athol also has considerable general litigation and advisory experience across most sectors, in particular the oil and petroleum industry. In recent years, Athol has also provided litigation advice to clients engaged in the growing sustainable energy generation sector in South Africa. 

In addition to this, Athol has acted in disputes arising in the tourism sector, between hotel operators and owners and leisure activity operators and their customers. Athol has also represented contractors and employers in construction industry disputes. 

Aside from his general corporate and commercial litigation practice, Athol has litigated and provided advice in sports and entertainment law to top international and local acts and sports stars, authors, film producers, and musicians. 

Athol obtained a BA LLB from the University of Cape Town and was admitted as an Attorney of the Supreme Court of South Africa (now the High Court) in 1995.

Simon Kayll

Chief Executive, MPS

Simon Kayll became Chief Executive of MPS in 2012, having previously served as Finance Director for MPS since 1999. As Chief Executive, Simon is responsible for leading MPS to implement the strategy developed by Council. This includes: 

-  promoting and maintaining the values of MPS

-  regularly reviewing MPS’s risk assessment procedures

-  overseeing all major operational issues

-  monitoring the company's financial performance

 
Simon is also a Director of MPI. 

Simon gained a BA (Hons) in accounting and economics at Oxford Brookes University, before going on to achieve an MBA at Manchester Business School. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. 

Simon qualified as an accountant with RSM Robson Rhodes LLP and spent a number of years as a management consultant, specialising in the financial service and legal sectors.
 
 

Angelique Kearney mono square

Angelique Kearney

Practice Manager and Oral Hygienist, Dr Kearney Advanced Dentistry

Angelique is an Oral Hygienist who qualified in 1991 at the University of Pretoria, South African and has a postgraduate diploma in Health Sciences Education (2020) from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg. Currently she is in her second year of her master’s in health sciences education at Wits. 

She is in private dental practice in Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa. She is also a part-time lecturer and supervisor of postgraduate dental hygiene students at Wits. 

She has been invited as a speaker to numerous events over the years and presented face-to face and webinars relating to dental hygiene, practice management and motivation. Angelique is also an international iTOP Lecturer. 

She practices in Centurion with her husband Willem (dentist) and daughter Robyn (dentist). She has one son, Jason, a civil engineer. 
 
 

Jim Lafferty mono

Dr Jim Lafferty

Dr Lafferty is a practising partner at Orgreave Dental Surgery and works as a dentolegal consultant at Dental Protection. Having graduated in 1993 from the University of Birmingham, Dr Lafferty initially worked part-time while studying for a master’s degree in Sports Science, then went on to build up his practice in Sheffield, with predominately NHS work.

In the past, he has been the Chairman of the BDA's Young Dentist Committee, UK Council, and English Council, twice elected on to the General Dental Council. Dr Lafferty began work as a local advisor to Dental Protection in the mid-2000s and served on the Dental Advisory Panel before starting work as a dentolegal consultant in April 2016.

Dr Nokukhanya Makwakwa

Deputy Chairperson for the Medical and Dental Board, HPCSA and SADA's FDI Liaison Officer

Dr Makwakwa is SADA's FDI Liaison Officer, where she was elected to the FDI Women in Dentists Worldwide Board.  

She serves the South African Dental Association and the profession with excellence, focusing her networking efforts on ensuring the optimum engagement of SADA in the FDI. She is a specialist in the Department of Community Dentistry at the Sefako and serves as a Board member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She began her oral health career as a Dental Therapist and went on to complete a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, an advanced Diploma in Clinical Dentistry, and a master’s degree in public health. 

With oral health care experience spanning over 20 years, in academia, public, private and mining sectors Dr Makwakwa has gained extensive insight into diverse sectors and is aware of the challenges and opportunities in both the micro and macro-oral health environments. Dr Makwakwa has a passion for Public Health and continued education for oral health professionals.

Jerry Mayaba

Director, MacRobert Attorneys

Jerry obtained the degrees BSocSci and LLB from the University of Cape Town. He further obtained an LLM in International Economic Business Law (IEBL) from Kyushu University in Japan. While serving his articles, his interest in litigation was harnessed. After his admission in 2004, he worked in the financial services sector where he gathered extensive experience and exposure in compliance, legal risk, and business management.

He served as Chairperson of Professional Conduct Inquiries for the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) where he was exposed to medical malpractice litigation. Jerry joined MacRobert Incorporated in 2016 as a director. 
 
 

Yash Naidoo mono

Dr Yash Naidoo

Dentolegal Consultant, Dental Protection

Dr Naidoo is a former healthcare and dispute resolution attorney at two of South Africa’s so-called Big Five law firms.   

His legal experience includes assisting private and public healthcare institutions in defending medical malpractice claims, assisting healthcare practitioners and institutions with proceedings before their regulators (HPCSA, AHPCSA, SAPC and OHSC), advising clients in respect of South African healthcare regulations, and assisting foreign-qualified medical practitioners in obtaining registration with the HPCSA.  

Prior to starting his legal career Dr Naidoo qualified and practised as a dentist. While practising dentistry full-time in the public sector, he obtained his LLB from the University of South Africa cum laude. He joined MPS in August 2020. 
 
 

Simon Nemutandani

Dr Simon Nemutandani

President, HPSCA

Dr Nemutandani graduated from University of the Western Cape, South Africa in 1989. He received Masters in Public Health (MPH) at University of Venda, Masters in Medicine ( MSc) and Masters in Community Dentistry (MChD) at University of the Witwatersrand, and PhD at University of Pretoria. He has spent more than 20 years working with indigenous health practitioners. He has presented research work to more than 100 conferences and workshops papers locally and internationally. 

 
 

Tinesha Parbhoo mono

Dr Tinesha Parbhoo

Head - Clinical Support Services, SADA

Dr Parbhoo matriculated in Pretoria in 2000 and completed her dental undergraduate degree from the University of Pretoria in 2005. After completing her community service, Dr Parbhoo completed a Certificate in Business Management from Unisa while working as an employee dentist. Dr Parbhoo then purchased the practice in 2012, which she operated on a full-time basis until its sale in order for her to pursue interests while working as an employee dentist at a corporate health organisation where she served until 2020. Dr Parbhoo joined SADA in 2021 as the Head of Clinical Support and continues to enjoy offering clinical guidance and support to its members. 
 
 

Raj rattan mono

Dr Raj Rattan

Dental Director, Dental Protection

Dr Rattan graduated from the University College Hospital in London. He has worked in general dental practice for over 30 years, during which time he was the principal and co-principal of a group of practices. He combined this with his role of Strategic Associate Dean in the London Deanery.  

A member of the original Options for Change task group in 2001, Raj was then appointed as a Policy Adviser to the Department of Health and continued to act as a professional adviser to a number of NHS and private sector organisations on a consultancy basis. He has considerable experience of both the NHS and the private and corporate sectors.  

Dr Rattan has authored and co-authored several textbooks, including titles on clinical governance, quality assurance and business management, and has published numerous articles in the dental press and contributed to a number of e-learning initiatives. He has examined nationally and internationally for the FGDP and is a visiting lecturer and teaching fellow on a number of postgraduate teaching programmes. He has lectured widely in the UK and overseas. In 2008, he was appointed MBE in the Queen's new year's honours list for services to dentistry. In 2014, he was admitted as a fellow of the International College of Dentists.  

Dr Rattan first worked as a part-time dentolegal adviser for Dental Protection in 1993, before becoming a senior dentolegal consultant in 2011. He became Dental Director in 2016.
