Eliminating implant risks

15 July 2014
The importance of pre-operative planning is emphasised in this brief case…

A dentist removed a lower incisor which was out of alignment with the dental arch and ‘tapped’ the socket to receive an ‘instant’ implant. He carried out the treatment without a radiograph and inadvertently bored through the apex of the adjacent central incisor. Subsequently both implant and incisor were lost.

Learning point:

The insertion of an implant always requires planning alongside pre-operative x-rays if risks are to be eliminated.
