The Tescopoly Alliance was set up in June 2005 as an ad-hoc group of independent campaigners to highlight the impact of a major brand like Tesco upon the high street and small businesses within it. Are there any lessons for us in dentistry, or have dental corporates been a force for the good? Can the "little guy" still compete and if so, on what terms? Is competition inherently beneficial, whatever form it takes? Which model of dental care provision delivers the best for the profession, and for patients?

14.35- 15.55 Class of 2002- for better or worse?
In September 2002, a group of dental students began their undergraduate studies. While they were at dental school the world of dentistry changed for ever. The Health and Social Care Bill was introduced in 2003 to pave the way for local commissioning and all that eventually followed in April 2006. The reforms of the Dentists Act became law in July 2005 and DCP registration began a year later. In the background came the introduction of tuition fees, the expanding EU, the influx of European dentists and the Governments decision to recruit thousands of overseas trained dentists to work in the UK. What does this mean for the class of 2002 and other young dentists especially those who are not yet practice owners? Are patients and the profession better off with the NHS or without it? If further change is likely what form could/ should it take?
Session Convener: Kevin Lewis
Speakers: George Manolescue, Peter Ward, Yogesh Wadher & Richard Hayward
