Now in its fifth year, the Young Dentist Conference has quickly become a highlight of the dental calendar for young dentists

The event brought to you by Dental Protection, the British Dental Association and the British Dental Journal, is specifically directed to the needs of dentists in the early years of their career. Featuring young dentists on the programme, the presenters have experience of the issues facing dentists starting out today and are able to make the programme innovative and entertaining, and a conference unlike any other for young dentists.

Each year the panel of top speakers explore how young dentists can develop their careers in ways not taught at dental school. Providing inspirational business advice from young dentists who have built successful practices, or whose expertise is in demand from the media, the speakers will explore business-led topics and how they can be harnessed to reflect the needs of dentists at the start of their careers.

Programme - 13 February 2010

09.00- 09.45: Registration, welcome coffee/tea and sponsors exhibition

09.45- 09.55: Welcome and Introduction

09.55-10.35 Elective cosmetics - who's decision is it?
As a nation, we are convinced that looking younger is the key to happiness. Dentists are being called upon more by patients who are unhappy with their looks and want some sort of cosmetic dentistry to halt the hands of time! In a slower marketplace, many dentists are learning to perform cosmetic dentistry to avoid referring patients outside of the practice. There may however be times when we need to say ‘no' and think about the patient's best interests when they perhaps can't see the negatives for themselves. Two young dentists with experience in cosmetic dentistry, discuss some of the ethical dilemmas that have arisen when faced with patients who expected too much from their treatment.
Convener: James Foster

10.35- 11.00: Questions and discussion

11.00- 11.35: Refreshments and sponsors exhibition

11.35- 12.50: Session Two: Teamworking Session
As a recently qualified dentist, you are likely to be one of the youngest members of the practice. Whether an associate or young practice owner, although your qualifications and knowledge will exceed those of some other members of the team, there are likely to be team members who have been working within the industry for longer than you are old! How can a young professional assert their knowledge and authority within the team without stepping on any toes? How can a young dentist respond to the needs of the rest of the team whilst developing their own career? A young associate from an award winning practice, and a young practice owner, discuss their experience of teamworking and the methods employed by their practices to get the best from their team members.
Convener: Stephen Hancocks

12.50- 13.15: Questions and discussion

13.15- 14.25: Lunch with the speakers available to take questions

14.25- 15.55: Session Three: Finding your niche
As many practices struggle in the current climate, many young dentists are worried about the opportunities available to them for opening a practice. How can a young clinician find their niche in a market which already seems to be saturated with practices? This session draws upon the experience of two young dentists, whose successful practices are defying the downturn and expanding within the current market.
Convener: Susie Sanderson

15.55- 16.20 Final questions

16.20 Close
