Young dentists enjoy a 'sell-out' conference
15 February 2010
Over 300 young dentists attended the sell-out Young Dentist Conference in London on 13 February 2010, where the expert panel of speakers included James Russell, a cosmetic dentist who has appeared in ‘Embarrassing Bodies' on Channel 4, and Sunita Verma, winner of an Asian Woman of Achievement Award in 2009.
James Russell, along with Kailesh Solanki, a practice owner from Manchester, explored the ethics of elective cosmetics and answered queries from the delegates on the legalities of bleaching and the correct way to approach the subject with patients. As the patient group is becoming increasingly pro-active in suggesting their own treatments, the two speakers discussed ways of ensuring that any treatment presents the best solution for them, even if it may not have been their preferred option.
Ben Wild, a practice owner from North Yorkshire and Alpesh Khetia, Workforce Director for Rodericks Dental, discussed how a young dentist can fit in as part of an existing team, and suggested methods of asserting authority whilst maintaining a positive relationship with other team members. Both speakers offered practical advice for the delegates on building and maintaining positive working relationships.
Sunita Verma, a private practice owner from London and Lee Nightingale, an NHS practice owner from Teeside, discussed their experiences of buying and expanding their businesses and suggested ways in which the delegates could find their ‘niche' in an increasingly saturated dental market. The delegates were interested to hear their experiences of practice ownership, the NHS tendering process and the positive and negative aspects of both private and NHS practice.
The Young Dentist Conference 2010 was the fifth outing of this annual event organised by Dental Protection, the BDA and BDJ. This year it was staged at the Royal College of Physicians in London. The organisers wish to thank the sponsors Dentsply and Schülke for their continued support of this event.
