Dental Protection (DPL) has a long history of providing education to members. By reviewing the mistakes that have arisen in the past it is possible to create practical lessons from which everyone can learn. When those lessons come from a non-dental environment they can be particularly potent when viewed in a dental context. The Annual Review 2011 published by DPL is based on many such pearls of wisdom collected from a number of the countries where Dental Protection operates (and a few where it does not).
It is not always immediately obvious how we can use and apply this received wisdom, in a context of clinical dentistry, but this is precisely where the value of such thoughts can be usefully applied. Pausing to consider such pearls of wisdom for a few moments creates an opportunity to see things anew and from a different perspective. Seeing things in a different light can help to change our mood and attitude and also our behaviour.
Over the next few weeks copies of the publication will be distributed to members in 70 countries and territories worldwide. Dental Protection has used its wide international experience to produce a volume of thought-provoking articles to help the dental team eliminate avoidable harm to patients. Alongside the case studies drawn from real-life episodes there are practical tools that can be adopted by dentists and dental care professionals everywhere to maintain a high standard in the care and treatment that they provide.
