Dental Protection announces new team for opening of Edinburgh office

20 February 2009

Dental Protection Ltd (DPL) and its parent company the Medical Protection Society (MPS) recently announced that they will shortly be opening a third UK office. This new office, which is to be in Edinburgh, joins the offices in Leeds and London where DPL's existing 36 dento-legal advisers are based. DPL's membership of over 53,000 dental health professionals in 70 countries around the world, including almost 70% of all UK dentists.

In making this announcement, Kevin Lewis, DPL's Dental Director, simultaneously confirmed two key appointments to the Scotland-based DPL team. In early March, Hugh Harvie who had led MDDUS's dental division from 1990, moves to DPL as Head of Dental Services, Scotland. He is joined by Helen Kaney, also from MDDUS, who is doubly qualified as both a dentist and solicitor and will work as a dento-legal adviser. Both bring a huge experience of dentistry and of the many issues that are specific to Scotland. Robert Broadfoot and Claire Walsh are two of DPL's existing Local Dental Advisers in Scotland and they will work closely with the new team in Edinburgh as well as with the dento-legal advisory team in DPL's other two offices. Martin Foster will continue to add a further dimension to DPL's locally-based team, and Christina McNiven -already a familiar face in Scottish dentistry from her former membership liason role with Wesleyan / Medical Sickness - joined the DPL team at the start of the year.

Kevin Lewis said, "This tangible demonstration of DPL's commitment to our members in Scotland, is something that many members have repeatedly asked us for. I am really delighted that Hugh Harvie and Helen Kaney have agreed to join us. They will strengthen and add a crucial local dimension and specialist expertise to what I firmly believe was already the best dento-legal advisory team in the world. Our Edinburgh office will be fully integrated with our existing two offices, creating an unrivalled team of 40 dento-legal advisers and the quality of service and support that an experienced team of this size makes possible."

He added, "The healthcare environment - particularly in dentistry - has been starting to look less and less like the rest of the UK and we felt that the time was right to reflect this in the way we serve our fast-increasing membership.

This organisation prides itself on putting members' needs first, above all other considerations, on going the extra mile for members, and on delivering a world class member service. The opening of our new office in Edinburgh will greatly assist this process and we are determined to make it a great success."
