Dental Protection urges rigour when CHRE investigates GDC

28 September 2011

Dental Protection has welcomed the announcement that the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) has begun an investigation into the way in which the General Dental Council (GDC) fulfils some of its statutory functions. The investigation follows concerns raised by former GDC Chair Dr Alison Lockyer when she left the organisation earlier this year, and requests made by the Department of Health.

CHRE has confirmed that it will investigate both the fairness and proportionality of processes around Dr Lockyer’s departure and the GDC Executive’s approach to internal disputes more generally.

Kevin Lewis, Dental Director, said:

“Dental Protection welcomes the announcement that CHRE will investigate the concerns. It is vital that the GDC is seen as credible, rigorous and transparent and that its own processes are fair if registrants and patients alike are to feel confident about the regulatory process.”
