A highly intensive interpersonal skills training programme which greatly enhances dentist-patient communication and creates significant behavioural and attitudinal change.

The CCP is a carefully designed programme focusing on improving interpersonal performance and reducing the risk of litigation or complaint. The programme aims to enhance the range of skills and options available when consulting with patients, enhance the understanding of the factors that influence personal performance, and provide support in applying these in the workplace.

Dentists who have undertaken the CCP have seen a reduction in complaints and claims brought against them.

Intensively-trained accredited members of the Dental Protection faculty facilitate the programme. All are experienced educators and trainers in dentist-patient interactions and clinical communication skills.

The small group format of the Clinical Communication Programme was developed to deliver more bespoke and focused training for those attending in order to help participants achieve their goals.

The programme

Duration: 6 months
Target audience: Clinicians who would benefit from intensive coaching in communication skills
Number of participants: Up to six per programme

The programme consists of three phases and is conducted over 24 weeks:

  • Phase one – preparation and goal setting
  • Phase two – three-day residential workshop
  • Phase three – implementation and coaching.
It involves face-to-face contact, a minimum of five sessions of telephone mentoring, and six hours of reflective activities. Also included is a three-day residential workshop with pre- and post-workshop activities and support. The programme focuses on four key objectives:

  • Enhancing communication and interpersonal skills
  • Decreasing incidences of complaints and claims
  • Improving the understanding of the factors influencing interpersonal performance
  • Enabling the participant to successfully apply practical skills in the workplace.

Whilst clinicians must be committed to fully engaging with the programme, feedback received from those who have completed it has been extremely positive with the vast majority of participants finding it an invaluable educational experience.
