Alan qualified as a dentist at University College Dental School, London in 1969, and has worked in general practice for over thirty years, as well as in the hospital service and as a university clinical lecturer. He is a long-serving member of the Barnet Local Dental Committee, and has been its treasurer for the last fifteen years.

He joined Dental Protection as a full-time Dento-Legal Adviser in 1997, and then became Head of Dental Services (London) before being appointed a Senior Dento-Legal Consultant in October 2011. He also manages DPL's UK corporate membership.

Alan still manages to find occasional sessions to continue treating patients in general practice.
