    Q. I am a dental nurse and I recently took a course on making impressions. Does my indemnity with DPL extend to such procedures?

As a dental nurse your membership with Dental Protection provides you with indemnity, support and assistance for this role. As you may know, the GDC’s Scope of Practice document states that dental nurses may take impressions to the prescription of a dentist if they develop these additional skills.

Rest assured that you are covered for both when you are your training to take impressions and when you take impressions in practice under the prescription of a dentist. This indemnity is provided on the understanding that you believe you have the skills and competence to undertake those procedures. If at any time you feel you are being asked to work beyond your training you should discuss the matter with the dentist and ask them to reassess what you have been asked to do. At no time should the treatment for the patient be disadvantaged by your level of competence.
