Q. I am planning to establish a new NHS dental surgery with three dentists and two dental nurses what indemnity do I have to have for the employees?
It is necessary for all registrants be they dentists, hygienists, dental nurses, etc to be able to demonstrate to the GDC that they have in place appropriate mandatory indemnity, and that is why it is necessary for each individual to make their own arrangements.
In the case of dental nurses, however, if your own individual indemnity arrangements with Dental Protection reflect your responsibilities as a Practice Principle (DFU category), then you are entitled to have up to five dental nurses indemnified by DPL within your own membership without any further cost to yourself.
This indemnity is the basic mandatory indemnity required by the GDC to protect for clinical negligence and does not give the dental nurses access to other any other legal services from DPL such as advice in respect of disciplinary matters, etc.
The GDC provide information about their requirements for indemnity here
