Young Dentist Conference bigger than ever in 2011

25 November 2010

For the sixth year in succession the Young Dentist Conference is expected to be a sell-out event on

Saturday 5 February 2011.

The event is organised by Dental Protection in conjunction with the BDA and BDJ and in response to the heavy demand for tickets in previous years the organisers have chosen a new London venue for the 2011 conference;

Novotel London St Pancras, Shaw Theatre, 100-110 Euston Road, NW1 2AJ

The conference is specifically directed at the needs of dentists at the start of their career and provides an innovative and entertaining programme that is unlike any other. It is also an opportunity to earn five hours verified CPD for which a certificate will be supplied.

The day-long event will feature three sessions,

Periodontology; health implications and management in primary care
With an increasing number of dentists being challenged in relation to their provision of periodontal treatment, this session aims to examine best practice within the primary care setting and explore how young dentists can provide the best possible patient care in the face of an NHS system which often causes confusion over the level of treatment that can be delivered.

If it’s too hot, step out of the kitchen
For many young dentists leaving foundation training, applying for jobs and financial worries, can lead to high levels of anxiety and stress, feelings which can be difficult to leave at home and can often be taken in to the working environment. Dental Protection’s experience with thousands of cases, shows that a stressed patient is more likely to complain about their physician, and a stressed dentist is at higher risk of making errors. Together they can make for an explosive combination!

Triple jeopardy
Effective communication with both with patients and members of the team is essential to ensure that the planned treatment meets its goals and expectations. A lack of communication can result in problems arising in spite of good clinical technique. This session aims to highlight the common problems that arise in crown and bridgework, removable prosthodontics and oral surgery. Naturally methods to avoid those problems will also be discussed.

Commenting on this year’s programme Kevin Lewis, Director of Dental Protection said, “These are difficult times, and history tells us that complaints and litigation, and business-related pressures and compromises all tend to escalate in times of economic constraint. We also know that these issues impact upon young dentists in ways that are different from colleagues in mid-career, and also that the nature and pattern of claims and complaints made against young dentists are different. This event is specifically focused on the needs of young dentists and is heavily subsidised by Dental Protection and the BDA for their respective members, making it an unmissable event for any young dentist who is seeking a safe course through the years ahead.”
