The convention and trade exhibition will be held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, Petaling Jaya and Dental Protection has two speakers on the programme.
Sunday 17th January
Kevin Lewis, the Dental Director of Medical Protection Society (MPS) and Dental Protection Limited (DPL) will be speaking to the title "High Tech - High Risk? The lecture will look at scientific advances, new techniques and new technology in dentistry, and ask whether they are helping us to manage existing risks more easily and effectively, or whether they are actually creating new and unfamiliar risks of their own, thereby making us more vulnerable?
New techniques create new challenges in relation to obtaining a valid consent from the patient. We can easily be misled by manufacturers' claims or by salespeople at the time of purchasing new equipment, materials and instruments into unrealistic expectations of what can be achieved, and this can in turn lead us to conveying these unrealistic expectations to our patients, resulting in complaints and claims. But as this presentation will highlight, even the apparent safety of the evidence base itself can create unseen problems for us from a dento-legal perspective.
Saturday 16 January
Dr John Boyens from New Zealand will speak during the morning of, on the subject of New Technology for the Management of Dentine Hypersensitivity. Although he has a background in private practice, John is now a Senior Lecturer in Periodontics and Oral Health at the University of Otago (Dunedin, New Zealand).
John is a gifted communicator as well as being a respected academic. Indeed, he is a member of the original teaching faculty trained and accredited by the Cognitive Institute for the Mastering Your Risk workshop described elsewhere on this page. In this capacity he is delivering this workshop on behalf of DPL to dentists in Australia as well as in his native New Zealand.
