The first international event brought to you by the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and Dental Protection (DPL) will see leading international experts in healthcare addressing quality, patient experience, safety culture, cost and professionalism.
In the twentieth century, average life expectancy at birth, in the developed world increased from fifty years to eighty. In the first half of the century, that was due to improvements in public health – clean water, improved sanitation and better management of infectious disease in children. In the second half, it was due to improvements in personal healthcare – better management of diabetes, hypertension, heart and vascular disease generally, mental health, cancer and myriad other conditions.
But improvement in the safety of health care has lagged behind. The US Institute of Medicine’s report, To Err is Human, said, in 1999, that hospital errors rank between the fifth and eighth leading cause of death in the US, killing more Americans than breast cancer, traffic accidents or AIDS. So, the challenge now in healthcare is to move the focus from making healthcare ‘better’ to making it safer.
Another challenge is to recognise that patients are now very active consumers of healthcare, not just passive recipients of it. Medicine is a service industry; improving the patient experience is now a major objective of the healthcare industry.
Making a Difference will bring together international experts in the field, both from inside and outside healthcare, to share their knowledge, experience and expertise on quality and safety.
