Hygienists & Therapists
International Symposium on Dental Hygiene 1-3 July 2010
Dental Protection is pleased to be supporting the International Symposium on Dental Hygiene, which this year incorporates the BSDHT Conference. Over 1,000 dental hygienists and therapists from around the world are expected to attend the event at the SECC in Glasgow.
Mike Clarke, Senior Dento-Legal Adviser, will be delivering a lecture during the symposium entitled 'Professionalism in Practice'. DPL will be exhibting on stand 21, and members of the marketing and dento-legal teams will be on hand to answer any queries you have. We look forward to meeting our Australian and New Zealand colleagues. Be sure to come over and introduce yourself!

A better deal for DPL members
In addition to the welcome reductions in dental insurance premiums for hygienists and therapists during the year July 2009 to June 2010, MDA National Insurance (MDANI) also responded to the representations made by DPL, in relation to creating a mutually satisfactory run-off solution (see below). The end result is highly satisfactory from our members' perspective and has been achieved partly through helpful enhancements of the MDANI insurance product to deal with situations where members permanently cease practicing in Australia, and partly by DPL offering new membership benefits which deal with a variety of situations where members temporarily cease practising for one reason or another - many of which impact upon hygienists and therapists at various stages in their career.
Another helpful development is the facility for members to move from State to State in the middle of an insurance / membership year without there needing to be a change in their category or rate, and irrespective of whether one is moving from a lower rate State to a higher rate State, or the reverse.
These changes had often wasted administrative time and effort for all concerned, necessitated fine adjustments to take account of variations in Government Stamp Duty rates from State to State, and yet ended up with a few dollars being paid one way or the other. The new arrangements are simpler, more flexible and the change in the State where the membership is ‘based' is simply picked up at the next renewal and formally reflected in the renewal documentation. However, mid-year changes in the actual practice category do need to be formally notified (to ken.parker@dpla.com.au) and will normally result in an adjustment of MDANI premium / DPL subscription respectively.
The relationship between DPL and MDA National Insurance continues to be excellent, and it is the spirit of mutual co-operation and continued improvement that the overall package available to DPL members is getting better and better.
Run off
Once you have paid your MDA National Insurance (MDANI) premium and DPL subscription for the 2009-2010 year, there is nothing more to pay if, during the year, any of the following situations occur:
- Permanent retirement
- Ceasing practice in/leaving Australia permanently
- Permanent inability to practice because of disablement or illness
- Death
- Maternity absence
- Extended leave of absence for postgraduate study
- Career breaks, eg, travelling, responsibilities as a carer, etc
For permanent retirement or cessation of practice, your policy can be endorsed to allow you to continue reporting claims that arise from your prior practice.
For temporary breaks in practice (3 months or more) you can renew your policy on a maternity or leave of absence category.
In any of these situations, if an additional premium is required, DPL will pay it on your behalf as an additional DPL membership benefit. The precise terms and limits of cover are set out in the product disclosure statement.
